Welcome — September 2011
September 6, 2011
Principal’s Message:
Welcome to all of our returning and new students and families to Rosemary Heights Elementary. We are looking forward to our 4th year as we get ready for over 460 full time students.
As in previous years, we will wait to see how many students have moved out of our catchment over the summer and how many new registrations we receive on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. However, history tells us, parents in our school community tend to register well before the first day of school.
On Tuesday, September 6, we will start to formulate classes and we hope to have all students in their classes for the 2011/2012 school year as soon as possible.
On Wednesday, September 7, students will report to the same class they did on Tuesday and on Wednesday afternoon, students will exit from the same classes they entered on Wednesday morning.
Kindergarten students have their own gradual entry schedules and that information will be communicated to families today.
School Hours:
Please note our school hours are as follows:
First Bell: 8:35 a.m.
Classes begin: 8:40 a.m.
Dismissal: 2:33 p.m.
No Dogs Please:
For parents new to our school community, just a reminder that in the interest of student safety, we do not allow dogs on our school property.
Nut Allergies:
This is a peanut/nut safe zone as we have some students that have severe peanut/nut allergies to these foods. For their safety, please do NOT send your child with any peanut/nut items. Thank you.
Absences/Lates:
For your convenience we have a 24 hour a day answering machine to let us know if your child is going to be absent that day, of if your child is going to arrive late. This is for the safety of your child(ren) and we would appreciate a call to the office before 8:40 a.m. if you have kept your child home for any reason. If we do not hear from you we will try all your contact numbers to make sure your child is safe. Thank you.
School Information:
Rosemary Heights tries to correspond with families using e-mail as much as possible. We will be sending out the forms for this information this week. Please return the forms to the school office as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on any important school news. Thank you!
Teacher job action: message from the Superintendant of Schools
To: Surrey School District community
Re: Teacher Job Action
As you are likely aware, the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) and its local Surrey Teachers’ Association have served notice of a first phase of job action in connection with provincial contract negotiations. Please be aware that all schools are open as usual and there will not be any pickets.
During the announced Phase One of job action, teachers in Surrey and throughout BC are withdrawing from administrative meetings and related tasks. In addition, in terms of direct student impact, teachers will not be preparing or distributing report cards, except Grade 12 marks required for graduation, post-secondary applications or scholarship purposes. The Surrey School District is committed to ensuring that our schools are safe and students are adequately supervised. During this job action, managers and other non-union staff will be performing many supervision duties (before and after school and at recess). In these circumstances, it will be most helpful if you are able to drop off and pick-up your children as close to the beginning and end of the school day as possible.
The district will inform parents through school newsletters and websites as well as on the district website at www.sd36.bc.ca of any changes or developments in the job action status, particularly as those changes may relate to any direct impact on students. For information regarding the key issues in the current contract dispute, you may wish to visit the BC Public School Employers Association (BCPSEA) website at www.bcpsea.bc.ca.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that the Surrey School District acknowledges that our teachers are participating in legal job action. We appreciate that these situations can be difficult to manage but we are committed to making every reasonable effort to continue to support student learning. Mike McKay Superintendent of Schools/CEO
